tax season 01/21/08

I received my annual "taxes preparation packet" from my CPA the other day.

If you are anything like me, tax time can be a bit of a stressful time of year for your business. Even if I had a great year and made more money than I anticipated, this time of year that just means additional taxes that need to be payed on top of the regularly-scheduled tax payments.

I thought it would be appropriate, as we look back on 2007 (and as we curse the IRS under our breath), to remember that we are paying taxes because we have made profit. And there are millions of people in the world whose situations are so dire that the word "profit" has no meaning to them whatsoever.

In that spirit, I'd like to share an innovative program that I've been participating in for several years now, called "The Greater Good Network". Basically, they ask people to visit their site(s) every day and click a button to help one or more areas of need: worldwide hunger, breast cancer, child health, literacy, protecting rainforest land, and animal rescue. Revenue from the advertising you see at the various sites goes straight to charitable partners. They even send me an e-mail reminder every day to visit the site and click.

They also operate online stores, where most of the profit for various items goes to their charitable partners. Or, if you'd like to purchase a charitable item (in the "Gifts that Give More" area of the store), all of the money you spend goes to a charity. Just click the link below and go shopping. It's up to you how you use the money - but any way you spend it, you will be helping those in need.

So Happy Tax Season! Let's learn to celebrate what we've got, and try to help those who aren't as fortunate.
